The Office of Counsel serves as central staff counsel to the Supreme Court. The Office of Counsel provides memoranda on legal issues to assist the Court in its role as the court of last resort in West Virginia. The various motions and other matters requiring rulings in cases pending before the Court are presented to the Court through the Office of Counsel.

The Office of Counsel also provides assistance to the Chief Justice in consideration of motions for disqualifications and temporary assignment of circuit court judges, family court judges, and magistrates. Copies of motions to disqualify and the judges' responses thereto are available from the Office of the Circuit Court Clerk.

The Office of Counsel also provides legal assistance to Senior Status Circuit Court Judges and Senior Status Justices.

Senior Status Judge Request for Law Clerk Support

Lawyers in the Office of Counsel can not provide legal assistance to the general public.
